New Zealanders are backing Jacinda Ardern's calls for stricter rules for live-streaming, according to a new survey.

A Horizon Research survey has found just seven per cent of us support current streaming laws, in the wake of the mosque attacks.

Meanwhile, 54 per cent believe online streaming services should be stopped until violent content can be screened out.

Graeme Colman from Horizon Research told Kate Hawkesby people expect social media giants to behave the same as any other business.

"It was sort of like what we expect from an airline or an electric blanket maker or a car maker, if it's causing a problem or if it's harmful, take it off the market and fix it first."

"That's the majority position of New Zeland adults in this poll. About 1.7 million people think that," he said.

He said Kiwis of all different ages and careers all think social media companies need to lift their standards.

"It's a pretty strongly held view that we should be turning it off so it doesn't do us any harm and if they can fix it, sure bring it back on but people are saying the law is inadequate."

However, Colman said 14 per cent of people don't think the Government should have any control over what's put on social media.

Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern is currently in Paris meeting with tech industry stakeholders and human rights advocates to discuss how to tackle violent content on social media.
