A Wellington mum is petitioning the Government to provide free or subsidised sunscreen for all children.
Kylie Findlay is also calling for the sunscreen industry to be regulated, after a Consumer NZ study found 60 per cent of those on the market don't meet SPF claims.
She told Kate Hawkesby we fund medication for children and sunscreen should fall under that category.
"It's a really strong proven like to prevent skin cancer, and I feel that that's our most vulnerable population to protect."
She has launched a petition to support her cause, that also asking for sunscreen to be funded for low-income and high-risk populations.
She says we need regulation like Australia and the United States has for their products.
"If it's making a claim, it needs to be treated like a therapeutic agent, and it needs to be able to back up those claims."
