Women at California universities could soon have access to abortion medication.

A Bill has been passed by the State Legislature which would see pills available at school medial centres and allow women to terminate their pregnancy during the first 10 weeks.

The legislation's now awaiting the Governor's signature before it can come into effect at the start of 2022.

California State Senator Connie Leyva is behind the Bill and told Kate Hawkesby abortion impacts a large number of women on campus, so it's important to have easy solutions available.

"We know that more than 500 young women, on campuses per month, have an abortion so having access to early medication abortion is critical."

However Leyva says it is a hotly debated topic.

"You always have the Pro-Life people they have been a part of it, but really I am most proud of the students who have come forward from various universities supporting the bill."
