Rachel Smalley: International Women's Day a token gesture

Today is International Women’s Day, and I know what you're thinking, but no, I'm not a fan.

I'm just not quite sure what it's purpose is and the fact that one day is dedicated to focusing on women and women's needs - well, it makes me feel as if I’m part of a niche group. It's our day in the sun. Great. Thanks so much for thinking of us.

For me it sits alongside world poetry day, or the international day of forests – I’m not kidding, that is actually a day – or world consumer rights day. There’s even a world sparrow day. Maybe they should have lumped women in with world sparrow day and then we could have just rolled it all into one and called it ‘International day for Birds’.

It’s a bit niche. As women, we’re given our own special day. Hooray – ladies, bring a plate please.

Now, in saying that, I am going to hear a woman speak today on the issue of diversity, and I’m very much looking forward to that.

But what I’m uncomfortable about is that on International Women’s Day we’ll discuss the lack of gender pay equality, the lack of diversity on our boards. We’ll talk about domestic violence issues probably, we might discuss the level of unpaid work that women do every day, we might raise the issue of how we can help women – and mothers – reach their full potential...and then we’ll park it there. That’s International Women’s Day over and done with for another year. Thanks very much, that was chipper.

It is a little patronising, I think, and not least when you see some of the stories circulating at the moment. The best story so far involves an airline, Air India. On International Women's Day, they say their longest flight will be staffed by a women-only crew.

Imagine. Right now, people, there’s a Boeing 777 in the air, and every one of the crew on board has ovaries. God help world aviation. What in god's name were they thinking, letting fully trained female pilots get behind the controls of a plane without male oversight?

So do you see? It’s patronising to me that we lump everything in to one day and every organisation uses it to pitch their message and say "look at us, we love women so much". We love women so much we're letting them fly a plane. On their own. I don't know, perhaps there's a very valid reason as to why it's called a cockpit? Just a thought.

Anyway, I would like to think that every day we're subconsciously thinking about the issues that affect women and we're slowly working towards closing the gender gap.

But International Women's Day feels a little bit like a step back in time to me.

Women are, well, we're just women. We're not a niche group, and every day should be a day in the sun.
