Ngaruawahia is now P free - and it's thanks to gang-member vigilantes.

The head of the Tribal Huk gang last week warned dealers of methamphetamine they'd be getting a visit, if they didn't get out of town.

All has been quiet for two days.

But Ngaruawahia community board member James Whetu doubts the problem has been resolved. He believes that won't happen unless there's a collaborative effort by all in the community.

He's concerned there's potential for a turf war in Ngaruawahia.

Mr Whetu told Rachel Smalley the town's not really sure what to think yet, because many would rather see proper enforcement in action.

"It's a response I think that is probably needed. No-one likes P, and it's just unfortunate that it didn't come from the right agency to address this issue."

But he said while Tribal Huk does operate as a gang, it also gives back to the community.

"My two little ones - they are beneficiaries of the Huk's Christmas giveaways. They giveaway presents and they put on a day of feeding the community."
