It's widely known that some city dwellers are packing up and moving to the regions.

But this is putting increased pressure on provincial areas as they struggle to keep up with infrastructure and housing.

Tauranga is a prime example: the western Bay of Plenty is expected to grow to nearly 300,000 by 2048.

But how do these places plan for the future.

Lecturer of Civil Systems Engineering at University of Canterbury Dr Tom Logan told Kate Hawkesby that intensification - such as giant concrete towers - is not the right solution, and the communities should be designed for people

"Imagine a community with kids playing on neighbourhood streets or the pocket parks. It's about safe, friendly, healthy green spaces for everyone."
