A stoush is brewing over America's Cup racing to go ahead this weekend following Auckland's drop to alert level 2.

Protocols permit racing to go ahead, however America's Cup events say they do not want to race this weekend unless Auckland moves down to alert level 1, and instead be postponed by one week.

However, Challenger of Record Luna Rossa thinks otherwise, saying either they compete this weekend in the Prada Cup regardless of alert levels, or they be handed victory in the challenger final.

AUT's sailing professor Mark Orams told Kate Hawkesby it's a symptom of the fractured relationship between Luna Rossa and Team New Zealand.

Mr Orams says there's no reason why racing cannot recommence, so questions are raised where America's Cup events are coming from.

"The suspicion is there might be some Ineos Team UK influence there because Ineos wants it delayed, the weather forecast this weekend is for light wind and they are going to really struggle and it could be all over for them."
