We'll know at the weekend who the next co-leader of the Green Party is.

James Shaw has been holding the reigns alone since Metiria Turei stood down last August.

On Sunday we'll know wins the race between Julie Anne Genter and Marama Davidson.

Former Green Party co-leader Jeanette Fitzsimons told Kate Hawkesby the Green Party is the only one that chooses its leader by a democratic process, which is why it's taken so long.

"This is not a coup in caucus that you can do in a couple of weeks, so of course it takes a little bit longer. I am really proud of the fact that we've maintained that democracy all the way through."

Fitzsimons says the process allows members to ask questions and find out about the two contenders.
