Teenagers could be missing out on learning about relationships - as school interpret sex education guidelines differently.

Researchers are gathering in Christchurch today to explore the direction of sex ed.

Auckland University senior lecturer Dr Terryann Clark told Kate Hawkesby the guidelines offer good advice, but schools can become frightened when it comes to sensitive issues.

"Most people think of it as the mechanics of sex. When I was teaching, young people really wanted to know about the relationship stuff."

Dr Clark says the guidelines offer good advice, but schools can become frightened when it comes to sensitive issues.

"Sex talks and talks about sexuality and relationships and gender roles need to happen throughout children and young people's lives."
