New Zealand took an early 5-nil lead through Kayla McAlister, before Australia levelled the match moments later.

A yellow carded to Portia Woodman late in the first half proved to be a decisive moment, with Australia taking control of the match before two late consolation tries to New Zealand.

Our sports reporter Matt Brown was watching the game with a host of rugby identities in central Auckland.

He says there were groans at the first Australian try - and then a growing realisation that the Australians were on top.

"There was a lot of shaking of heads among the coaches, but also a bit of pride at the end, and a round of applause at the end because New Zealand did still earn a silver medal."
