If you're on Windows 8 and are sick of not having a traditional Start menu, then there's hope yet.

Microsoft has unveiled their new operating system this morning - Windows 10.

The company says the new OS improves the user experience and has enhanced security and management capabilities.

On the face of it, it looks like the layout and operation is more similar to earlier versions on Windows.

The familiar Start menu is back providing quick access to programs and files that people use most, and it includes a new space to personalise it with your favourite apps, programs, people and websites.

Apps downloaded from the Windows Store now open on the desktop and can be resized and moved around and have title bars at the top allowing users to maximize, minimize and close with a click.

Programs can also be easily 'snapped' together, allowing four apps to easily snap to four quarters of the screen.

Another new improvement is the ability to have multiple desktops, allowing users the switch between distinct desktops for different purposes and projects and avoiding having too many apps open on the traditional single desktop.

The operating system will be available across all devices, from desktops and laptops to phones, tablets and Xbox.

Executive vice president of the Operating Systems group at Microsoft Terry Myerson says Windows 10 represents the first step of a whole new generation of Windows.

"This will be our most comprehensive operating system and the best release Microsoft has ever done for our business customers, and we look forward to working together with our broader Windows community to bring Windows 10 to life in the months ahead."
