Two-time Olympian and former world champion cyclist Melissa Hoskins has died after she was struck by a car in Adelaide’s inner north.

Paramedics rushed Hoskins to the Royal Adelaide Hospital with serious injuries after she was hit by a ute at Medindie on Saturday night.

The 32-year-old mother of two died overnight. Nine News reports that her husband Rohan Dennis, a fellow cycling star, has been charged over her death.

Police arrested a 33-year-old man known to Ms Hoskins and charged him with causing death by dangerous driving, driving without due care and endangering life.

He was bailed to appear in Adelaide Magistrates Court in March.

Dennis was one of Australia’s top male cyclists before retiring last year. He won two Olympic medals, two world championships in the time trial and individual stage wins in the Tour de France, Giro d’Italia and Vuelta a España.

Born in Perth in 1991, Hoskins won gold in the team pursuit at the 2015 world championships and rode in the team pursuit at two Olympic Games and competed on the road from 2012-15 with Australian professional team GreenEDGE.

Major crash officers attended the scene along with detectives from Eastern District CIB to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident, police said.
