US diplomats are remaining stanch in the face of a physical attack by a Korean activist seeking reunification of the Korean peninsula. Â
The knife-wielding activist lashed out at the US ambassador to South Korea Ambassador Mark Lippet, slashing him in the cheek.
Secretary of State John Kerry has responded to the attack, saying threats will never deter or intimidate the United States.
He's called the ambassador to wish him a speedy recovery.
US correspondent Richard Arnold says the attack has drawn huge criticism from America.
"Mr Lippet has had 80 stitches after suffering that slashing cut to the right side of his face. He also has stab wounds to his left arm and hand. Doctors say it will take months for him to get full use back to his hands, if he does at all."
