BAFTA award-winning British actress Liz Smith, known for her role as the ailing Nana in the tv sitcom The Royle Family, has died aged 95.

Her tools of the trade were her unforgettable face and unforgettable voice.

Liz Smith's death comes in the same year her as Royle Family co-star Caroline Aherne, who died from lung cancer in July.

In 1984 she got the best supporting actress BAFTA for her role in the movie 'A Private Function'.

She began her acting career in 1970 and was in Emmerdale, Last of the Summer Wine, I Didn't Know You Cared, The Vicar of Dibley, and many others.

In 2009 Liz Smith was awarded the MBE.
