Italy's coastguard has coordinated the rescue of 2200 migrants in the Mediterranean after receiving distress calls from more than 20 overcrowded vessels drifting in waters off Libya.
It's been one of the biggest single-day rescue operations ever and the work is continuing.
It's unclear how many people remain in danger but initial estimates had put the total number of people on board stricken ships at up to 3000.
