New Zealand is unlikely to be put at any risk should the Foreign Minister work with the US on talks with North Korea.

It's believed Winston Peters - working alongside the US - will announce in the next few days he's set to visit North Korea to try and open dialogue between Pyongyang and the West.

Dr Marc Langeigne of Massey University's Centre for Defence and Security Studies, said New Zealand has the ability to act as an honest broker in the dispute between the US and Pyongyang.

''I think there is the perception that while New Zealand does stand with the United States in regards to the concerns surrounding North Korean security, there isn't the same support for any military option.''

Dr Marc Langeigne said Mr Peters will be relying on his connections from his last visit there back in 2007.

''New Zealand does have a reputation of having an independent foreign policy, and having a very distinct foreign policy approach helps as well.''
