Wellington's 30,000 rail commuters have had a reprieve, with rail workers calling off a strike planned for Friday.
The Greater Wellington Regional Council says all Metlink services will be operating after the Rail Maritime Transport Union withdrew its action.
The union had earlier announced its members would strike from 2am to 11.59pm, saying rail companies Transdev and Hyundai Rotem were refusing to deal with them fairly.
Transdev, which operates the trains on behalf of the regional council, said good progress was made during negotiations on Wednesday night and on Thursday.
Those negotiations were set to continue.
Rail workers went on strike on November 16, but the predicted gridlock on the roads that day didn't eventuate.
