National blamed for Wellington train strikes

The former National Government's approach to industrial relations is being blamed for today's train strike in Wellington.

All trains have been cancelled in the capital for 24 hours, as workers strike to continue the hard-fought-for pay and conditions in their current contracts.

There will be no buses to replace them, and Wellington motorists are being urged to plan their journeys this evening.

Workplace Relations Minister Iain Lees-Galloway said they've inherited a situation riven with conflict - because that's the approach the National Party took.

"I think what we need to work on is a more collaborative and constructive approach to industrial relations."

The New Zealand Transport Agency is thanking motorists for a relatively smooth run into the city this morning.

But commuters still need to think about their journeys out of the city this evening.

They should check NZTA's real time updates before travelling and think about leaving earlier or later than usual.

Auckland could face a similar issue, with train workers considering striking after negotiations with Auckland Transport over the future of the train manager position fell apart.
