The Brooklyn Wind Turbine's set to be replaced with a bigger version.
After towering above Wellington for 21 years, the Meridian Energy turbine's reached the end of its practical operating life.
The company's been granted resource consent to replace the 45-metre turbine, with a 77-metre one.
The new turbine will produce about four times more energy than the old one.
While it will sound different, the level of noise will be the same.
It will cost 2.5 to three million dollars, and will be constructed next year.
