Christchurch woman has allegedly stolen a car and crashed it after the vehicle was spiked on a busy main road.

A police spokesman said inquiries were under way after the woman allegedly stole a car on Breens Road in Burnside just before midday.

Officers then spotted the car on Bealey Avenue a short time later, the spokesman said.

“It was not pursued, however, it was spiked,” he said.

“It has then crashed at the intersection of Bealey and Fitzgerald aves.”

The woman was moderately injured and was taken to hospital.

Police inquiries into the crash were ongoing and charges were being considered.
