A three-day fishing ban has been imposed near Mitimiti Beach as a sign of respect after a man was found dead there on Thursday.
The man’s body was found on Mitimiti Beach by a member of the public about 2.30pm.
The rāhui, imposed by the hapū of Mitimiti, Whangapē, and Pawarenga, will extend from Karapiti to Te Pahi and will end on Sunday.
Organisers of the Mātihetihe Marae annual fishing competition said the rāhui would not affect the event, which starts on December 28.
The event will start with a karakia as a mark of respect for the man and his family.
Kaitaia police have been unable to identify him and are asking for the public’s help.
“If you have family or friends that fish in the area near Te Pua Pua Creek, or have any information which could help us identify the man, please get in touch via 105 and quote event number P061001068.”
