The Kiwi Ferns have overcome a slow start to produce a resounding result in their opening match at the women’s Rugby League World Cup against France.

It took 24 minutes before a point was scored in York as rain and wind lashed the players and healthily-filled grandstands. However, once the deadlock was broken, the Ferns never stopped.

Over the next 54 minutes of play, the New Zealand team scored nine tries as part of what ended as a 46-0 trouncing.

Katelyn Vaha’akolo and Roxy Murdoch-Masila each scored doubles while Madison Bartlett, Apii Nicholls, Page McGregor and Amber-Paris Hall also dotted over the line.

Nicholls was named player of the match for her work at fullback for the Ferns but said it was a team effort.

“I wouldn’t have been able to perform the way I did without my team,” Nicholls said while accepting the award.

“We did start a little bit slow but we were able to pick up at the end of it. Our girls did well and really proud of them.”

Coach Ricky Henry ackowledged France as worthy opponents that provided the side with plenty to think about after a tough lead-up for the squad that saw a fire damage training gear and personal belongings during the week.

“Give credit to the French team, they really came out and put it on us... so we just had to be patient there and hopefully get back into the game.

“We can take a lot out of it. I think travelling here, 30 hours, we’ve had a fair bit of adveristy the last week or so, so really pleased with the efforts of the ladies but I know we’ll get better too. We’ve got a lot of improvement in us.”

Next up for the Kiwi Ferns is a matchup with the Cook Islands on Monday morning NZ time.
