The name of a Canterbury horse has caused a stir in the racing industry.

Smiles like Jacinda trialled at a Rangiora Harness Racing event.

Under Harness Racing New Zealand's naming policy, a name can't be approved if it has political significance or might cause offence to a reasonable person.

HRNZ chief executive Gary Woodham says the owners have been asked to change the name, and they're waiting for their decision.
