Kiwi golfer Danny Lee has earned the biggest victory of his career with victory at the LIV Golf event in Tucson.
Lee won US$4m ($NZ6.38m) for the victory in his second start on the LIV Golf tour after starting the final day four off the lead.
He beat out Brendan Steele, Louis Oosthuizen and Carlos Ortiz in a four-way playoff, taking the victory in the third playoff hole.
Lee sunk the winning putt from off the green for a birdie on the 18th hole. Lee left the PGA Tour last month after earning US$1.26m last season with his one victory on the PGA Tour coming at the Greenbrier Classic in 2015.
“I’m speechless right now. I wasn’t even looking at the individual score all day. I was only asking about ‘how is our team doing?’. That’s the reason why Kevin [Na] called and that’s the reason I’m over here,” Lee said about leaving the PGA Tour to join LIV Golf and the Ironheads GC team.
“The individual victory means a lot. I haven’t won since 2015. I just felt like winning is just not my thing but today just changed that. It’s good to see I’m capable of playing some good golf”.
Lee had a chance to complete the win a hole earlier but missed a six foot birdie attempt by the hole. But he didn’t miss from further away off the green, sticking with the putter and sinking it for the win as Oosthuizen and Steele watched on.
