Top seed cruises into quarter-finals

Madison Keys has wasted little time in advancing into the last eight of the ASB Classic, brushing aside Jaqueline Cristian in straight sets.

The American overcame an early technological issue to triumph 6-1, 6-2 over the world No 85 Cristian, setting up a clash with fifth seed Clara Tauson in the quarter-finals.

Bizarre call in Keys-Cristian match

Strange scenes in the opening game of the match between top seed Madison Keys and Jaqueline Cristian of Romania.

At 40-15 Keys reviewed a Cristian return with the replay showing the ball went over the line, and the graphic saying ‘in’.

Keys went to question the call which the umpire who confirmed it an error with the graphic. A similar issue occurred during the opening doubles match of the day.

“The ball was in but the wrong graphic was shown,” the umpire confirmed.

“Well now I don’t trust that’s it,” Keys told the umpire.

The issue was worse in the doubles match which started Thursday’s action on centre court. In the first point of the third set super tiebreak, a ball was called out by the automated system, despite the graphic showing it was in.

It caused a delay of three or four minutes, as Clara Tauson and Sloane Stephens - who had lost the point - remonstrated for a prolonged period with the umpire.

”On the computer it is saying in so we have to go with that,” said the official repeatedly, much to the bemusement of the players and also some in the crowd.

The umpire explained that the system had displayed the wrong graphic.

The fully automated system, which has replaced the traditional human line judges, is new at the ASB Classic this year.

Delayed start on Grandstand

1pm: The start time of the Keys-Cristian round of 16 clash is being pushed back with a doubles match currently taking place. Rebecca Marino and Tara Moore have forced a super tie-break against Sloane Stephens and Clara Tauson.

Stephens and Tauson eventually take it out 6-4, 3-6, 10-7.
