An SAS soldier says civilians were killed in a raid in Afghanistan in 2010.
It comes as the government and Defence Force continue to deal with the fallout of claims by Nicky Hager and Jon Stephenson.
The soldier, speaking to the New Zealand Herald, who was not personally in the raid, said it's widely known among the elite military group.
They said two people found shot dead were killed by SAS marksmen who thought they were acting under the Rules of Engagement.
The other four are said to have died in a barrage of fire from US aircraft called in by a New Zealander.
The soldier's claim is at odds with the Defence Force's position, that allegations of civilian casualties are unfounded.
The book Hit & Run claims six civilians were killed and 15 injured, in a revenge raid on two villages.
The soldier's account also conflicts with that claim in the book, that the SAS was driven by revenge.
