Our newest MP is leading the latest demonstrations trying to convince politicians to vote down the Trans Pacific Partnership Agreement.

Protests will be held throughout the country today and are being supported by the Council of Trade Unions, Greenpeace and other organisations.

Organiser Barry Coates, who is replacing Kevin Hague as the Green's next MP, said there's still time for New Zealand to back away from the deal.

"This agreement is a long way from over and could still be stopped. These issues are really about democracy and about whether the voices of people are heard, or whether it's just the voices of big business."

Coates said cases like the tobacco companies suing Australia for plain packaging legislation will be a reality if the TPP is approved.

"There are 696 cases around the world. It's not a theoretical possibility of this actually happening. New Zealand's out to sign up to an agreement with countries that have some of the most litigious companies."
