National's accusing the Government of leaving a pothole in this year's Budget when it comes to road maintenance funding.

Transport spokesperson Simeon Brown says hundreds of millions of dollars worth of funding for both State Highway and local road maintenance has been slashed.

"There's been a 25 percent reduction in the State Highway maintenance budget and a 43 percent reduction in the local road maintenance budget. Which means more potholes on our roads after last year's 'Year of the Pothole.'"

Brown elaborated that funding for State Highway maintenance decreased by $164 million in this year's Budget.

He says funding for local road maintenance has been slashed by $314 million.

Brown says the Government isn't treating road maintenance as a priority.

"They're focusing on their pet vanity projects like Light Rail and Let's Get Wellington Moving, which are which are going to cost the Government billions of dollars."

Transport Minister Michael Wood has been approached for comment.
