Andrew Little is pushing for Kiwi companies to have a fairer share of the pie when it comes to winning government contracts.
His Members' Bill outlining new government procurement rules is due to have its first reading in Parliament today.
The Labour leader is describing it as a "Kiwi first" policy, one that will give preference to local suppliers when it makes sense to do so.
"It does accept too that it may well be that the Kiwi supply isn't cheapest, but they've got to look at whether the impact of retaining jobs, having better incomes are other economic benefits that are retained, rather than going to an offshore supplier."
He's confident the measure can be introduced without breaching the country's current trade agreements.
"Even with existing FTAs, and the obligations that we're under, it is allowed. For example Australia does, even the US does."
