UPDATED 2.13pm: There'll be no political comeback this year for Hone Harawira.

The former Te Tai Tokerau MP is at Waitangi today, spending time with locals while politicians meet Maori leaders on Te Tii Marae.

Hone Harawira's quashed speculation he might stand in the Northland by-election - as a way to Parliament.

"That thought has occurred to many people, and many of whom have rang me.

"My wife said, 'the answer is no', so the answer is no."

However, Mr Harawira says he may try to reclaim his former Te Tai Tokerau seat in 2017.

"Well that's different. I'm a son of the Te Tai Tokerau. I will work harder for the people of Te Tai Tokerau than I ever will for anyone.

"If I was to go back to parliament, it would be because I didn't see a champion of the poor and dispossessed. If that doesn't happen then I'll be back in parliament in 2017."
