The Government's taking advice on the situation unfolding at Manus Island detention centre where around 600 refugees and asylum seekers have been left without water, food or power.
The site, which had housed two thousand people hoping to seek refuge in Australia, was officially closed on Tuesday.
Australia's Foreign Minister Julie Bishop is washing her hands of responsibility for the remaining asylum seekers' safety.
Pressure is now mounting on the New Zealand Government to step in where Australia has failed and take these refugees, with a petition calling for that to be delivered to Parliament tonight.
A spokesperson for Immigration Minister Iain Lees-Galloway said he's taking advice but the offer made to the Australian Government in 2013 still stands, where New Zealand would take 150 refugees from Manus Island.
The Australian Government rejected that offer earlier this year.
Many of the refugees have refused to leave Manus Island despite the lack of amenities. The Guardian reports it is because they fear for their safety in the Lorengau community where they are expected to be moved.
