National MP Chester Borrows looks likely to keep his Deputy Speaker's job while subject to legal action.

The Whanganui MP has been charged by Police with careless driving causing injury - it relates to an incident at an anti-TPP protest in his Whanganui electorate in March.

Mr Borrows has offered no comment on whether he will stand down while his case is before the Courts, and the only other course of action for him to be removed from the role is for MPs to hold a vote of no confidence in him.

However Mr Borrows is well liked and respected across the political divide so the possibility of it happening appears slim to non-existent.

New Zealand First leader Winston Peters is adamant there's no need for Mr Borrows to stand down as Parliament's Deputy Speaker while he faces a charge of careless use of a motor vehicle causing injury.

He's opposed to having people stand down when they're under investigation, when no wrong-doing has been proven.

"It's a disgraceable trend in our society and it should not happen to Mr Borrows. Let's hear what the court has to say and they make a decision then."

Mr Peters said in the past we've seen MPs, who've turned out to be innocent, pilloried when under investigation

"This idea that someone automatically stands down because they're under a police investigation or charge, in Mr Borrows case would be utterly wrong. He should remain in the job."

Meanwhile Labour, the Greens and United Future aren't offering an opinion as to Mr Borrows retaining his Deputy Speaker role.
