The dream of playing in another Rugby World Cup might not be over for those All Blacks not selected in this year's squad.
Israel Dagg and Cory Jane were among the surprise omissions from the 31-strong side named to defend the trophy.
Captain Richie McCaw said it's really tough seeing players who have been there before not make it this time around.
He said he really feels for them and that some pretty good quality rugby players missed out.
But McCaw said history shows more than one of them may need to be called on, in case of injury.
He believes that if a member of the squad was injured and a training squad member was called on, they would be in "pretty good shape."
The omitted players from the All Blacks training squad are on standby in case of injury.
McCaw believes the squad picked to defend the Rugby World Cup absolutely has what it takes to win.
"You look around the men we've got..we've got a good start."
McCaw said he is pleased with the team and is welcoming on board one of the freshest All Blacks, Waisake Naholo.
Naholo has been named in the Rugby World Cup squad, barely six weeks after suffering a broken leg in his test debut.
His quick recovery was aided by a traditional Fijian leaf-based remedy.
McCaw believes Naholo has earned his spot and has a great attitude.
"He's got a great attitude.. I can't wait to see him running around again."
After the selection, McCaw joked that he wouldn't have minded the aid some leaves - alluding to the foot injury which plagued him in the 2011 world cup.
