Heavy thunderstorms could strike the central North Island this afternoon, MetService says.
MetService has issued a severe thunderstorm warning for the central North Island this afternoon and evening.
This area includes Taupō, Waikato south of Tokoroa, Taumarunui, inland Bay of Plenty, Taranaki and Taihape.

Scattered heavy showers, thunderstorms and localised downpours of between 25–40mm an hour are expected within this area.
MetService meteorologist Ngaire Wotherspoon said some parts of this area may not be affected, but the potential is there.
“Localised downpours can cause surface flooding, especially in low-lying areas.”
The rest of the North Island can expect warm and sunny weather, with temperatures forecast to rise well into the 20s.
The South Island is cloudier, notably over Canterbury and Marlborough, but this cloud is forecast to break up this afternoon, MetService said.
Cloud and light rain will remain in western South Island areas this weekend, remnants of a front over the area.
