Today marks the beginning of Cyber Smart Week and we're being encouraged to do just one thing about cyber safety.

Cyber Emergency Response Team Director Rob Pope said cyber crimes are widespread, yet many people feel cyber safety is too much of a hassle to act on.

''International evidence shows that 85 per cent of cyber security incidents can be prevented just by taking simple measures like updating your software system.'''

He said people shouldn't leave their computers or mobiles opened or unlocked, and updating operating systems can keep hackers out.

''It's like if you leave your windows open and your doors unlocked, you're inviting people to come in. So the security updates can be used to stop attackers from coming into your system.''
