Vandals have targeted Waihī‘s refuse station overnight in a “senseless attack”.

Hauraki District Council said the Waihī Refuse Transfer Station was able to open on time today without disruption, “but not thanks to a senseless vandalism attack on the office overnight”.

“Electronics were the target, no cash is kept on the premises and there is CCTV security,” the council said.

“Police are investigating. Thanks to staff who responded quickly to get things open for the public.”

A police spokesperson confirmed they received a report of a break-in at the Dean Cres facility between 5pm yesterday and 8am today.

A number of items had been stolen, police said.

“We’re making inquiries to locate those involved,” the spokesperson said.
