Several vehicles have been damaged, and one passenger injured on an Interislander ferry crossing that left Wellington this morning bound for Picton.

KiwiRail said the 8.45am Kaitaki sailing out of Wellington experienced a “significant roll while passing near the Karori lighthouse area”.

“As a result, some passenger vehicles shifted and sustained damage. One passenger suffered a minor injury, and our crew provided immediate medical assistance.

“Interislander is supporting affected customers, and a full assessment is being conducted following the vessel’s arrival in Picton.”

Footage sent to the Herald showed the ferry being battered as large waves sent sheets of water over the bow.

Interislander has provided passengers with tips to avoid seasickness for the other sailings.

A lingering low-pressure system is bringing rain or showers to many parts of New Zealand, with thunderstorms, large swells and strong winds affecting the centre of the country.

Interislander posted a service alert on its website, notifying passengers today’s 6.15am Picton-to-Wellington crossing had been cancelled because of the rough sea, as had the 11am return service.
