The final curtain beckons for a cornerstone of the Auckland theatre scene.
Auckland University's Maidment Theatre has been put on the chopping block.
In an internal email obtained by Newstalk ZB, it's been revealed the University's Vice Chancellor will recommend to a Capital Expenditure Committee of the University Council, that the theatre be permanently closed, and eventually demolished.
Vice Chancellor Stuart McCutcheon says it's a regrettable conclusion to reach, but the $16 million needed for earthquake restrengthening is not cost effective and still wouldn't make the theatre fit-for-purpose.
The Maidment has been closed since December 2015 owing to safety concerns over its seismic strength.
