Unite Union says Restaurant Brands is poised to do away with zero hour contracts.

The company owns KFC, Pizza Hut, Carl's Junior and Starbucks and has come in for criticism for employing workers on zero hour contracts which offer no job security.

Unite Union says the company will end the practice by July this year.

The union's national director, Mike Treen, says it's a huge step forward for workers in the fast food industry.

Mike Treen says it means workers at KFC, Pizza Hutt, Carl's Junior and Starbucks will have guaranteed hours - giving them job stability.

"There's very strong clauses in the agreement that whenever someone leaves a job in the store, or when shifts become available, that those shifts will become available to existing staff."

"They'll take a snapshot of the previous three months work, and 80% of those hours will be guaranteed going forward."

He's now calling on McDonald's, Burger King and Wendy's to follow suit.
