Neighbours woke to hear a woman screaming this morning as a North Shore home was engulfed in flames.
Two people are in hospital after being rescued by firefighters from the burning house on Girrahween Dr in Totara Vale.
Neighbours told the Herald they heard screaming and yelling from the house about 5.30am.
“I went outside and saw a big fire, it came out of the windows, the flames and smoke.
“It was heavy wind and rain, about five or six fire brigades were were about 5.30am.”
A neighbour believed a middle-aged couple were among the occupants of the house.
At 5.43am four fire trucks, a support vehicle and a specialist appliance rushed to the scene of a well-involved blaze at a two-storey residential property on Girrahween Dr in Totara Vale, Albany.
Hato Hone St John responded with two ambulances and two rapid-response vehicles.
“We assessed and treated one patient in a critical condition who was transported to Middlemore Hospital, and one patient in a moderate condition who was transported to North Shore Hospital,” a St John spokesperson said.

A Fire and Emergency spokesperson had earlier told the Herald that firefighters had rescued one person from the blaze engulfing the top storey of the house.
They were “being treated by ambulance staff on the scene”, the FENZ spokesperson said.
“This is a two-storey house and the top floor of the house is well-involved.”
Firefighters were still battling the blaze, they said.
“We don’t know the cause of the fire at this stage.”
A police spokesperson said emergency services responded to reports of a house fire in Girrahween Drive, Totara Vale, at 5.43am.
“Everyone has been accounted for.
“One person has been transported to hospital in a serious condition.”
