Leading Canterbury University through the earthquakes was one of the toughest tasks of Dr John Wood's career.
He's been awarded Companion of the New Zealand Medal of Merit in this years Queen's Birthday Honour's list.
Dr Wood oversaw the development and adoption of the UC Futures plan for recovery and transformation.
He says through that they were able to successfully negotiate with Government, and keep the University open for business.
"Extraordinary tribute not just to the council and to the senior management, but all the staff and students who stuck with us collectively is just an enormous effort.
"A great university was able to deliver."

He was also recognised for negotiating Treaty of Waitangi claims with Ngai Tuhoe.
Dr Wood says his work has given him nothing but admiration for the people of Tuhoe.
"They're a very impressive iwi, there's no doubt about that.
"Extraordinary leadership and an absolute resolve to deliver from the settlement outcome, deliver for their people."
