Three people have been injured, one of them critically, after a car hit a power pole in Darfield.

St John says a second person has seriously injuries and a third is in a moderate condition.

A helicopter was dispatched, and all three patients were rushed to Christchurch Hospital.

Police say the incident happened on Old West Coast Road around 9.30am.

The road is clear and the Serious Crash Unit has been advised.
