Tauranga students are heading home after being stranded by wet weather.

The group of 27 year 11 students and three teachers from Otumoetai College were in Whangamata for a surf camp when flooding hit the Coromandel.

Otumoetai College principal Dave Randell said a bus is on its way to collect the students, after they spent the night in a make-shift emergency centre.

He said despite having some wet gear the students are all in good spirits.

"Not a problem it was quite the experience."
