UPDATED 10.48am:Â People who survived the Napier earthquake are gathering for an annual event today.
This week marks 84 years since the disaster, which killed 256 people and devastated the Hawke's Bay.
For the past 15 years it's been commemorated by an afternoon tea for survivors, organised by volunteers.
Napier's deputy mayor Faye White says it's a chance to share memories.
"The survivors are now 84 to 102."
White says people are brought together to commemorate a life changing event.
"These people survived and have got a story to tell."
The event will feature music from the era, a display of earthquake photos, and the traditional cutting of the Mayor’s cake by the oldest and youngest survivors.
