The new Silver Ferns coach has stamped her authority with her first selection.
World Cup squad members Phoenix Karaka and Malia Paseka have missed out on the extended Silver Ferns squad for 2016.
Janine Southby has named 14 nationally contracted players, with Karaka and Paseka only selected for the development squad.
Southby spoke frankly about the reason for their omission.
"Unfortunately neither had done the work prior to trials and the message to them both is go and do the work, and we'll absolutely be looking at you and happy to include you once you have done that."
Underlining the point, Southby showed hard work would be rewarded by singling out shooter Cathrine Latu, who was dropped last year.
Southby said Latu has earned her spot in the past two months, especially through improving her fitness levels.
"Although I'm new with the group, the management group have all made the comment over the last few days that she's shown a real passion and hunger and is enjoying herself again - we're seeing a new Cat."
Tactix defender Jess Moulds is the surprise selection in the national squad, joining Steel players Storm Purvis and Gina Crampton as the only new faces.
Veteran defender Anna Harrison returns after having her second child.
Southby said while Harrison is an older player compared to the others, she's earned her spot.
"Anna has been on form and there's still an element that you have to pick on form."
"Next year we still have expectations that we need to perform."
Southby is able to select up to 18 players for national contracts and had indicated she would leave spaces open for players to prove themselves in the ANZ Championship.
