Colleagues of slain Work and Income staff members Peg Noble and Leigh Cleveland wept, as a song was sung to mark the first anniversary of their deaths.
Around 40 people gathered at the former offices in Ashburton this morning, where the pair were killed one year ago today.
Two wreaths, containing prink and yellow flowers were laid, with some colleagues placing their own at the entrance to the building.
Local MP and Associate Social Development Minister Jo Goodhew said it’s been an emotional day.
"Tears, but a lot of hugs as well. A lot of overt expressions of support, and that's the way a day like today needs to be handled."
A two minute silence was held in their honour.
Mayor Angus McKay said everyone's come together today in strength.
"The community of Ashburton is a really resilient community. We will remember, but we take the lessons and move on to the future."
MSD Chief executive Brendan Boyle said it’s been hard occasion for many.
"It's a moment and a day of reflection for them. I can tell you that some of the staff spent some time at the cemetery, at the grave of Peg Noble, so that was an emotional time for them."
Staff had the morning off, with the office closed until one pm.
