There are concerns about a lack of contraceptive options over the silly season as pharmacies across the country report a shortage of an oral contraceptive brand.
Wellington pharmacist Bev Waller says she has been rationing out prescriptions of Levlen ED for the last two months and has less than two prescriptions worth left.
Ms Waller said the pharmacy had been giving out prescriptions based on needs, prioritising those who were going on holiday or who live out of town.
"You feel a bit awful when you have to explain it to people," she said.
Pharmac Director of Operations Sarah Fitt says the issue is a result of the Ava 30ED supplier running out of stock before the Levlen 30ED supplier was due to begin to provide stock.
The Levlen 30ED stock had arrived in New Zealand and would be available to pharmacies from December 4, she said.
"Pharmac would like to thank pharmacies and wholesalers for their assistance in managing this supply issue and minimising disruption for consumers."
