Whether Christchurch gets a new town crier may hinge on the future of the city's earthquake damaged Cathedral Square.
After tolling his bell around the city for over 25 years, Stephen Symons is ready to hang up his hat at the age of 68.
Whether a new town crier is appointed though is another matter.
Christchurch City council's Head of Public Information and Participation Diane Keenan says at this stage they're not looking for a replacement.
She says they're currently reviewing the Council's City promotion function so until a decision is made they won't be making any appointments.
Stephen Symons says Cathedral Square is the natural setting for a town crier and with the Cathedral's fate in limbo, so is the future of the job.
"Until we can get the square sorted. we really don't have a proper place for a crier. This could take some time judging by the way things are going."
