Relief for Christchurch's homeless

There's relief that vulnerable people in Christchurch struggling to find accommodation will get some help from the government.

It's giving around two-million dollars in funding to two community housing providers to provide short-term accommodation, alongside support services such as drug or alcohol counselling and budgeting support.

City Missioner Michael Gorman says having the support services is very important

"Even before the quake housing and homelessness was always about providing not just the physical roof overhead but being able to sustain accommodation."

Social Housing Minister Paula Bennett says currently there are 92 people on their Housing Register that would need this service

"They are in situations I think nobody would like, such as camping grounds, sleeping in caravans and emergency housing, but obviously that moves every day."

A motel complex is being leased by VisionWest to house up to 20 of the households, while the other 10 will be at properties used by Comcare across the city.

Councillor Glenn Livingstone says the council pushed for emergency and transitional housing, and is pleased it will be in place for the next two years.

He says it can always be reviewed if the demand is still strong in two years time.
