More than one hundred people have shown up at Auckland's Aotea Square today to protest the alleged assault of a transgender woman in prison.
The activist group No Pride in Prisons questions why the woman was sent back to a men's facility.
They're calling on Serco and the Department of Corrections to release public statements about the incident.
Event Organiser Emilie Rakete said she's over contacting a ministry which doesn't return her calls.
She said the ministry's not sensitive to transgender woman and she's had enough.
"We've got a fat load of nothing from corrections over the past year."Â
Members also want changes to the Corrections Department's policy on the initial placement of transgender people in prisons.
